WORKSHOP DATES & ITINERARY
DATES:
• July 18th, 19th and 20th
• August 15th, 16th and 17th
Please note: The first day doesn’t begin until 4 pm.
ITINERARY:
The time of year and season will determine what we will be photographing. Typical scenarios can include ranch lifestyle, horses, cattle and other spontaneous western themes involving male and female models, portraiture and rodeo action. My goal is to schedule a different shot every 1.5 hours to complete 4 shots before lunch. I will explain composition, how to control light with the aperture and shutter, backlight situations and motion blur.
FRIDAY:
• 4 pm Meet and Greet at Creek Ranch Headquarters
• Soft drinks, beer, wine and snacks will be served
• Dinner at 6:00 pm
• Saturday morning’s photo session will be reviewed
(discuss times to meet, what to be prepared for etc)
• Adjourn for the evening
SATURDAY MORNING:
• Meet at HQ at 7 am
• Review shot list and head to location
• Break for lunch around noon (lunch provided at ranch headquarters)
• After lunch we will begin to work in Adobe Lightroom 5 and start with editing the morning’s images. I will initially demonstrate various techniques on how to enhance your images and then work with you individually on specifics as time allows before the afternoon shoot begins
SATURDAY AFTERNOON/EVENING:
• Back on location by 4 pm to shoot approximately 4 more shots
• When finished, we’ll head back to the ranch headquarters for soft drinks, beer, wine and snacks followed by dinner.
SPECIAL NOTE:
If it's rodeo season in Steamboat Springs, our evening shoot will be at the Romick Arena in downtown Steamboat. We have secured an area at the rodeo for us to set up and photograph the event. Plan to arrive no later than 7 pm. The rodeo begins at 7:30 and ends around 9 pm. Dinner is available for purchase at the Romick Arena or there are restaurants that serve dinner afterwards.
SUNDAY MORNING:
• Meet at HQ at 7 am unless otherwise instructed. (There are different ranches in the area which offer additional opportunities to photograph.) As with Saturday, we will try to accomplish 4 shots before lunch.
• Break for lunch around noon (lunch provided at ranch headquarters)
• After lunch, post digital work in Lightroom 5
SUNDAY AFTERNOON:
• Back on location by 4 pm to shoot approximately 4 more shots
• When finished, we’ll head back to the ranch headquarters for soft drinks, beer, wine and snacks (no dinner will be provided). Goodbyes will be said and new friends (with great photos!) will depart for home.
GEAR TO BRING
Clothing:
Even in July and August, mornings and evenings in Northwest Colorado can be quite cool. We have seen snow in July at the Rodeo! Please pack for 20 to 30 degree temperatures in the morning and evening. By noon, 80 degree temperatures are likely throughout the day, but strong winds and rainstorms can pop up unexpectedly.
Think "layering". To be safe we suggest packing a winter jacket, rain gear, thermal underwear, thick socks, comfortable boots, hat, gloves and anything to keep you warm outside. Chapstick and sunscreen are a must. We will have plenty of water.
Camera Equipment:
Please bring all the camera equipment you normally use. My preference for this workshop is a DSLR camera (digital reflex camera). I use Canon Camera equipment.
If you have a laptop computer please bring it. I work on a Mac. A laptop will allow you to get more out of the workshop and be more hands-on with your photos and editing program. If you don’t have a laptop, I will have one Mac computer for the group to work on at the ranch. Please understand that one Mac and ten workshop students will slow our editing and learning time down quite a bit. External hard drives are great to have at the workshop so you can move your photos off of the workshop computer on the last day. I use the Lacie 301370, 500GB rugged all terrain, USB 2.0 port hard drive.
Software:
We will be using the editing program Adobe Lightroom 5 to upload, catalog and edit images. You will learn the basics of Lightroom 5 in the workshop. If you currently use another editing program that you like, I will be more than happy to work with you in that program. It would be great if you have time prior to the workshop to review the online tutorials and learn how to download photos as well as catalog them into your Lightroom 5 program. This is quite easy. There are many tutorials on the Adobe website along with individual lessons you can find online. You can download a free 30 day trial of Lightroom 5. I strongly recommend doing that prior to the workshop.
You will be taking hundreds of shots without being able to download them until our editing time in the afternoon. Therefore, you will need to bring between 5 or 6 high speed SD photo cards that are at least 4GB capacity are larger.
